Strachan Bridge Crossing Update

Hi everyone,

Below is a PDF from the Strachan Bridge meeting last night:
http://nnnow.ca/Strachan_Crossing_Presentation_May18_2010_FINAL.pdf

Metrolinx is planning to have their Project Headquarters in the neighbourhood (901 King St. W. – by the Shoppers’ Drug Mart) during the construction. They’ve committed to having community relations staff and the Project Management team there to answer questions and deal with issues.

More detailed plans will be available in ~3 months.

Some further notes are below – numbers/details may not be precise (based on my scribbles), any questions on specifics should be directed to Metrolinx.

Infrastructure / Train Traffic
-          Two tracks being added
-          Trains: ~59/day today
-          Eventually (per day by 2015):
o   140 Airport shuttle trains
o   GO adding ~10 trains
o   VIA adding 6
o   CN – 4 trains
o   CP – 20 trains
-          Adding Barrie and (eventually) Bolton services
-          Trains will be diesel to start – all development includes accommodation for electrification (more below)
-          Overpass will include bike lanes – over 1M wide
-          Discussions to try and include an extension of the West Toronto Rail Path (http://railpath.ca/)
-          Plans for design and aesthetics on overpass being worked up
-          NO piledriving (unlike Weston) – pilings will be installed using augurs instead (less noise)
-          Enlarging Etobicoke and Weston stations and adding parking
-          Current design is the maximum height – the mandate to the consultants is to make as low as possible
-          Sound abatement part of plan – consultant has been brought in to address and minimize noise

Timelines
-          ~3 months for detailed plans
-          King St. W HQ and PM office opening ~August this year
-          Installing air monitoring station in next 5-6 months
-          Oct/Nov this year to start utility relocation and pilings
-          Main work aiming to start March 2011
-          Project to be completed by end of 2014 – hard date (PanAm Games)

Electrification and Environmental Concerns
-          Electrification Study to be complete in December 2010
-          3 air monitoring stations being installed along the route to check quality – one at Duro and Strachan
-          GO evaluating catalytic converter-type units to cut emissions on diesel trains from Tier 2 to Tier 4 (90% reduction?)

There’s an Electrification Study update meeting as wel:
Thursday, May 27
7 - 9:30 p.m.
Lithuanian House
1573 Bloor St. W.

Please RSVP to estudy@metrolinx.com
